Student Moving in Chicago
Move-in week is a logjam. Every dorm and campus high-rise near Loyola, DePaul, UIC, and Columbia is trying to use the same freight elevator on the same Saturday, and the building only hands out loading-dock slots in tight windows. Drag a futon and four boxes up a Rogers Park walk-up by yourself and you lose half a day, scuff a stairwell, and still have to return the rental truck before the meter runs out.
It gets worse when the calendar squeezes you. Leases near campus flip on the first of the month, finals end and move-out starts the same week, and August into September is the busiest stretch of the year for renters across the city. If your building needs a Certificate of Insurance before they let movers in, that paperwork can hold up your whole day, and a lot of students do not find out until they are standing at the front desk.
That is where our crew comes in. Melendez Moving handles student moves all over Chicago: dorm rooms, campus apartments, studios, and small one-bedroom moves, with uniformed movers, the right equipment included at no fee, and scheduling we build around your semester dates. We help coordinate your building's COI and freight-elevator reservation, plan the smallest moves to keep them affordable, and treat your stuff with careful handling. Take care of people. Period.
Pro tip from our crew
If you're moving in or out of a dorm or campus-area building (DePaul, UIC, Loyola, Northwestern, UChicago), reserve your move date and the building's freight elevator the moment housing confirms your dates — late-August turnover is the single busiest week in Chicago moving, and the elevator and loading-dock slots at high-rise student buildings get claimed first. Book early, send us the building's COI requirements up front, and have your RA or building manager's contact ready so our crew can stage the dolly run without getting turned away at the dock.

When to Book Student Moving
Book as early as you can lock in your move-in or move-out date, especially for August and September. That stretch is the busiest of the year for Chicago renters, and the good time slots near campus go first. If you can be flexible, mid-month and mid-week dates are easier to schedule and usually run more affordable than a first-of-the-month Saturday.
If your dorm or campus high-rise requires a COI or a reserved freight elevator, start that two to four weeks out. Buildings book those windows fast during move-in week, and we will help you get the paperwork and the slot squared away before move day so nothing stalls at the front desk.
How Your Move Works
- 1
Get a quote
Tell us your dorm or apartment, the floors, the building access, and your date. We size the crew to your move and give you a clear estimate, including a binding estimate option for longer hauls.
- 2
Plan the details
After you book, we call you directly to go over building rules, COI and freight-elevator needs, loading-dock or street access, and anything fragile. No surprises on move day.
- 3
Wrap and load
The crew wraps your desk, dresser, and mattress, breaks down bed frames, and loads with dollies and straps so the carry up or down the stairs is quick and clean.
- 4
Move and settle
We get your things to the new place, carry them up the walk-up or in through the freight elevator, reassemble what we took apart, and set you up so you can start the semester.

We Handle the Building Headaches, Not Just the Boxes
In Chicago, the furniture is rarely the hard part. The freight elevator is booked, the condo board wants a Certificate of Insurance before the crew gets past the lobby, and there's nowhere legal to park the truck. We plan all of that before move day.
Certificate of Insurance (COI)
Many high-rises and condo associations require a COI on file before move day, and some won't let the crew past the lobby without one. Send us your building's requirements and we coordinate the paperwork with property management.
Freight Elevators & Loading Docks
We help reserve your freight-elevator window and loading-dock time slot, then plan the move around them so your slot is never lost.
City Permits & Parking
On blocks without a dock, the truck needs a legal spot. We walk you through Chicago's moving-truck permits and posted signage so you're not circling on move day.
Walk-Ups & Vintage Stairwells
Tight greystone staircases and narrow doorways are our normal. We measure first, protect woodwork and floors, and disassemble whatever needs to come apart.
Not sure what your building requires? Tell us about it and we'll handle the paperwork and scheduling.
Honest, Transparent Pricing
The number one fear when hiring movers is a final bill that blows past the quote. We explain exactly how pricing works and confirm the details with a direct call before move day, so the number you hear is the number you pay.
Hourly Pricing
Best for most local moves. You pay for the crew and truck by the hour, with a clear estimate up front of how long your move should take based on your home and access.
Flat-Rate & Binding Estimates
Best when you want one locked number, common for long-distance moves or moves with tricky building access. We assess your inventory and access up front and hold the price.
What Drives Your Final Cost
- How much you're moving (your inventory volume)
- Access on both ends: stairs, elevators, and carry distance
- Packing help and specialty items like pianos or antiques
- Storage needs between closings
- Timing, since month-end and summer are the busiest
Our No-Surprises Promise
- No surprise stair or long-carry fees
- No last-minute truck or fuel charges
- No inflated materials upsells
- Standard equipment included at no fee

Student Moving FAQs
Yes. Small moves are a big part of what we do. A dorm room, a studio, or a one-bedroom near campus does not need a full-size crew, so we size the crew to the load and plan it to keep your cost down. Tell us what you have when you request a quote and we will scope it honestly.
Yes. Many Chicago dorms, campus apartments, and high-rises require a COI from the moving company before they let the crew in, and some also require a reserved freight elevator or loading-dock slot. We help coordinate that paperwork and the reservation. Get us your building's requirements two to four weeks ahead and we will handle it so nothing holds up your move day.
That is the plan. We schedule student moves around semester dates, move-in week, finals, and lease turnovers. August and September are the busiest weeks of the year in Chicago, so book your date as early as you can. If you have any flexibility, a mid-month or mid-week move is easier to schedule and usually more affordable than a first-of-the-month Saturday.
We handle walk-ups every day, from Rogers Park three-flats and greystone stairwells to tight vintage staircases near DePaul and UIC. The crew brings dollies, hand trucks, and straps at no extra fee and knows how to get a mattress, desk, and dresser up and down narrow stairs without damaging your stuff or the building.
Yes. We do long-distance moves across the lower 48, so we can bring a student to Chicago for school or move you back home after, with a binding estimate so the price you are quoted is the price you pay. We carry MC and DOT authority for interstate moves, which you can verify before you book.
You do not have to break down furniture. Our crew disassembles bed frames, desks, and shelving and reassembles them at the new place. For boxes, pack them full enough that they do not crush but not so heavy they are hard to carry, use packing paper for anything fragile, and label an Open First box for your essentials. If you would rather not pack at all, ask about adding packing to your student move.
For most student moves it's three things: the number of stairs (so many campus apartments are third-floor walk-ups in Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, and Rogers Park with no elevator), how far the crew has to carry between the truck and the door when there's no loading zone, and the calendar date. A studio's worth of boxes and a mattress is a fast job; a walk-up with a tight stairwell and street parking a block away takes longer. Tell us the floor, whether there's an elevator or alley access, and your date, and we'll give you a straight quote.
A dorm room or a furnished studio is often a 2 to 3 hour job for our crew, including the dolly run and load-up. A one-bedroom student apartment with a couch, a bed, and 20-plus boxes usually runs 3 to 5 hours. Walk-ups, long carries from the truck, and freight-elevator wait times at big buildings add time, so if you're on a tight housing checkout deadline, book a morning slot and have everything boxed and labeled before we arrive.
What Customers Say
We needed to transfer furniture between apartments in the same downtown building. Several big pieces had to be negotiated around a narrow corridor and into the elevator. They handled it expertly.
This is the 20th time I've moved in my adult life, and Melendez Moving is, hands down, the most professional and meticulous moving company I've ever used. They took better care moving my baby grand than the piano company did when I bought it. I couldn't recommend them more highly.
From start to finish, Melendez Moving exceeded my expectations. I had a long out-of-state move (Chicago to Dallas) and they delivered all my belongings without a scratch within 48 hours. Prompt, knowledgeable, and very friendly.
